Keeping Your House Secure on a Budget

image 2Your home is probably your most valuable possession, and protecting it properly goes without saying. However, until something bad happens, people usually don’t take all the necessary precautionary measures, on account of the “it won’t happen to me” factor. Well, in truth, it won’t happen to you – until it does happen, that is. The whole point of taking proper precautionary measures in protecting your home is staying safe from bad things that might happen to those not careful enough.

Police

image 5Before doing anything home security-wise, make sure you’ve consulted professionals – enlisting a local police department means having a trained police officer sent to your home, to do the security walkthrough with you. These professionals act on experience, telling you what parts of your home need most protection and which are the common vulnerabilities.

After consulting the police, you can move on to other steps of keeping your home secure.

Alarms

image 7This might sound obvious, but it is the choice of many not to opt for alarm systems, on account of these systems not really doing anything but alerting the authorities. Well, although the primary function of an alarm system really is to alert the authorities, alarms have a psychological factor to them, preventing the burglars from keeping up with their criminal activities, for fear of being busted. Alarms are not so much a trendy security measure, as they are a goes-without-saying trait of any home.

A Dog

Although the sound of the alarm system will definitely scare those teenage wannabe burglars away, a professional thief is aware of the average police response time, as well as of the quickest and shadiest getaway routes and this is why they usually don’t fret too much. Dogs, however, can be a surprising factor for them. Even if a burglar is well-aware of the fact that a dog is tied, this factor will make them feel uncomfortable and prone to error and misjudgement.

If you do not want to get a dog, think about putting the ‘dog’ sign on your gate anyway – thieves usually do not aim at houses with this sign, unless they’ve done some proper research first.

Cameras

image 8Much like the ‘dog’ sign, a ‘security camera’ sign will go a long way in protecting your home from potential security threats. However, if you choose to get proper security monitoring, you’re not only looking at a legitimate scare tactic, but also at a possibility to get your stolen valuables back, should such a situation ever arise.

Socialize

This step might not sound conventional when it comes to home security, but chatting with your neighbours every now and then doesn’t only help you connect with people. Keep in mind that it is not your close relatives and best friends that will help you when a burglary happens– it’s the neighbours that are likely to be on the spot. If those living next-door to you don’t like you, chances are that they won’t care about your house being robbed – unless they have a particularly strong sense of justice.

Always Lock Up

Although suburbs may sound like a place where you don’t have to lock your doors, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even if you are home, make sure you always lock your doors.

Keeping your home safe is very important. That is why it is best to always be cautious, and do everything that’s in your power to keep your property and your family safe.
