The smaller the space, the more attention you have to pay to make it functional and pleasant. Small rooms may not be made bigger, but they can certainly seem bigger. Having a room which doesn’t feel crammed is important because you can feel confined and uncomfortable in such a room. Luckily, there are a few hacks you can turn to in order to make your room appear more spacious.
Get rid of clutter
The first thing you should do is remove all unnecessary items from the room. You can’t afford to keep such things in a small room, since they make a small space much more cramped. Also, don’t put many pictures on the walls. Instead, go for one larger painting and your room will feel more spacious. Next, create a focal point – an area or feature that will draw the eye, such as the bed in the bedroom or the table in the dining room. Arrange other items to draw attention to that area and don’t install many accessories. Finally, keep the floor clear and remove any items that don’t really serve any purpose. The room will look bigger and you won’t have to worry about tripping over stuff.
Lighting
The thing that can make your room appear larger more than any hack is natural light. Try to bring as much of it into the room and add some creative effect using lighting fixtures. Large windows connect the room with the outdoors, thus making it seem larger. If you don’t boast a great view, just put flowers or plants near the windows and use lamps to brighten the space.
Light colours and contrasts
Optical illusion is a common element of interior design and you probably know that the colour you choose for your room has a great impact on both your mood and your perception of its size. Light colours make a room look brighter and bigger, so you should use such colours on your walls, which will make the space feel open and airy by maximising the effect created by natural light. Interior painting and decorating projects in Sydney, for example, show us that you should go for soft tones of off-white, blue and green or paint your wall trim and mouldings in a lighter colour than your walls. That will make the walls appear further back, making the room seem bigger.
Mirrors on the wall
If placed well, mirrors can really make your room seem bigger. The secret is to use a focal point and angle the mirrors toward it to create the illusion of depth. Since mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light, your room will seem more spacious during both the day and night. Particularly effective is a mirror placed near a window to reflect the outdoors. Apart from mirrors, glass table-tops also give your room a more open feel, which is the same effect as the one achieve using mirrored cabinet doors.
Furniture arrangement
Each room requires some furniture at least, but the problem with small rooms is that a lot of precious space is taken up. The trick is to use multifunctional furniture, such as a chest that can be used as a coffee table or a bed with drawers for storage underneath. An expandable dining table, folding tables and nesting tables, which can be moved away when you don’t need them are also examples of such items. If you really need larges pieces in the room, make sure you put them against the walls to maximise the open space. In doing so, be careful not to block pathways.
If you follow the tips above, you’re bound to create an illusion of having a bigger space, but you’ll also have a space that is more functional and pleasant to live in, which is the ultimate goal of every interior design project.
