Xeriscaping-Landscape of the Desert

What is Xeriscaping?

Xeriscaping is defined as a method to conserve water through the use of creative landscaping. In North America, well over 50% of water used is for watering lawns and maintaining landscaping. With water becoming a precious commodity in the US, xeriscaping become a viable alternative. Decorative rock is becoming more popular and a different way to add color and beauty to your yard.

Six Advantages of Xeriscaping

• Xeriscaping saves water. One focus of xeriscaping is the use of native plants.

• It requires less maintenance. Outside of a little weeding and pruning, xeriscaping needs minimal effort. Simple irrigation systems can provide the necessary water for xeriscaping.

• No fertilization or pesticides are needed. Utilize plants native to your area to eliminate the need for chemical supplements.

• Xeriscaping improves property value. The cost of the process is outweighed by the increase in Neighborhood Property Values.

• It is pollution free. The use of fossil fuels to power lawn mowers is eliminated.

• It provides wildlife habitat. Using native plants in xeriscaping provides cover for local wildlife.

Landscaping Tips

• Diversify your landscape. A landscape with trees, bushes, flowers, and lawn can be more water and energy efficient, which can save you money.

• Use low-water use and adapted plants and trees.

• Mulch, a good, thick layer of mulch (we’re talking 3 to 4 inches here, folks) cools flowerbeds, inhibits weed growth, and slows the evaporation of water from the soil. Place mulch around the bases of trees, shrubs and flowers to reduce evaporation.

• Consider the water needs of all plants included in your individual irrigation zones. Use plants with similar water needs in the same areas.

• Among the most obvious water-saving measures is not to water during the high heat of the day because of loss through evaporation.

• Water deeply. Deep soak your lawn’s root zone where the water won’t evaporate as quickly and will do the most good for the plant.

• Don’t over water. Excess watering means that fertilizers and pesticides will move out of the root zone of the plant, rendering them ineffective and those toxins can penetrate into the groundwater, impacting water quality and increasing the environmental burden.

• Aerate your lawn, then over seed. Aerate in the spring or fall, then over seed with a lawn mix designed for our local conditions.

• Let your grass grow longer, and train your roots to grow deeper. Letting your grass grow longer means less watering, mowing, and improved root depth. Raise mowing height to 2 1/2 to 3 inches so that the lawn can shade itself.

• Know what kind of soil you have, which can help in knowing what type of plants to use and how often to water. Sandy soil needs deeper watering for longer periods and less frequently. Clay soil needs short intervals more frequently
